Hi, guys. I really hope I get a respond here, somehow. Hahahaha.
I'm a final year student majoring in fashion and I'm currently conducting a research on Peranakan culture, in particularly the arts of embroidery and beading of old.
I've been doing some reading online and purchased a book by Cheah Hwei-Fe'n for further reference. However, both book and online resources alone are not sufficient for me to give me an in-depth understanding of the meticulous culture that the Peranakan has.
My grandma is a Peranakan from Malacca, but being the youngest at her home and attending boarding school from young, she wasn't able to give me the details that I need to know more about the culture and practices. Though she's effortlessly wonderful in the kitchen. Hahahaha!
I would greatly appreciate any form of help you may provide me, even by just sharing your knowledge in lifestyle and practices of the Peranakan. Chances are, if there are replies, I may end up asking A LOT of questions. If you may, please do bear with me. Hahahaha.
It would also do me great help if you can direct me to craftsmen who are willing to share the art of embroidery and beading with me. I am currently residing in Kuala Lumpur, while I attend school in Mantin (somewhere close to Nilai). I am willing to travel to preferably Malacca, Johore and Singapore.
But if there is a need for me to meet someone willing and knowledgable, I am willing to travel further to Penang or Indonesia.
As my study is constrained by a time frame, the first half of my thesis are to be submitted in December 2012 and carried forward to April 2013.
Your share of knowledge and everything in between would be of great source of information to me. Please do reply to the thread if you have the time to spare. =)
